The Rev. Joseph J. Padelt, 89, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2015, in Chatham, Ontario, Canada.
Born in Detroit to Adolph and Anna (nee Euteneuer) Padelt, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; graduated from the University of Detroit in 1950 and worked in his family’s wholesale business at Eastern Market. He attended St. Peter’s Seminary in London, Ontario, Canada and was ordained May 28, 1960, at age 34. He celebrated his first Mass at his home parish, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Grosse Pointe Woods.
Rev. Padelt served several churches in Ontario. He was an associate pastor at Holy Cross Parish in London, Immaculate Conception Parish in Stratford and Sacred Heart Parish in Windsor. He was pastor of St. Benedict’s Parish in Sarnia for 11 years and Blessed Sacrament Parish in Chatham for 16 years.
He lived in Chatham upon his retirement and recently celebrated 55 years as a priest in the London diocese.
Rev. Padelt is survived by his nieces, Mary Anne Burke (Pat), Caroline Wooten (Adam), Suzanne Daudlin (Steve), Gabriella Turner (Roger), Lisa Cloutier (Mark) and Krista Thompson (Scott) and nephews, Jerome Schulte (Heather), Frank Schulte (Betsy), Bill Gigante (Leslie), Peter Gigante (Joanna) and Karl Gigante (Teresa).
He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Peacock (Henry), Anna Schulte (Jerome) and Gabriella Gigante (William) and niece, Monica Schulte Denktas.
A funeral Mass was celebrated June 22 at Blessed Sacrament in Chatham.
