November 11
th. is a special day in many countries, commemorating the end of World War I when at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Here are three examples of countries that celebrate this day.
In the United States – it is Veterans Day, honoring military veterans; persons who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Not to be confused with Memorial Day, Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.
- To our neighbors in Canada – it is Remembrance Day, honoring the end of WWI. The red poppy has become a familiar symbol of Remembrance Day in Canada and the Commonwealth due to the poem "In Flanders Fields" written by Canadian physician, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.
- In my homeland, Poland – we have National Independence Day to commemorate the anniversary of the restoration of Poland's sovereignty as the Second Polish Republic in 1918 from the German, Austrian, and Russian Empire. Following the partitions in the late 18th century, Poland ceased to exist for 123 years until the end of World War I, when the destruction of the neighboring powers allowed the country to reemerge. This year marks the 100th Anniversary.
Let us continue to pray for peace around the world.
