A lector is a liturgical minister who is charged with proclaiming the scriptures assigned to a liturgy. The mission of this ministry is to proclaim the Word of the Lord in a way that is inspired by the Spirit and in a way that the listener understands in a clear and profound way the messages of the sacred scriptures. The vision of this ministry is that the lectors of the community of St. Clare will be dedicated to this ministry. They will prepare themselves by the study of the scriptures, by prayer for understanding, by practice in the delivery of the Word, and by trusting in the Lord to help them in proclamation so that the listener receives the message from the scripture that was intended for them. Anyone can be a member of this group who has attained the age of sixteen, is a practicing Catholic, and has a gift of reading in a way that is interesting, organized, and meaningful. Initial training is on an individual basis and includes reading background information and meeting with the director of the lector ministry for practice and coaching prior to serving as a minister. Lectors are scheduled on Sundays, Holy Days, special occasions, and weekdays. A lector can expect to be scheduled to a weekend liturgy about 2-3 times per quarter.
