I grew up on the east side of Detroit near City Airport. It seemed everyone in my neighborhood was Catholic. I went to a Catholic grade school, high school and college. I can’t really point to an “aha” moment when I accepted my faith. It has just always been part of my life.
I believe that the spirit of God is in all of us. I don’t think it something that we earn by being “good” (because how could we ever be good enough?) or that we even have to ask for it. God’s spirit in us is just always there. Even so, most of the time I recognize in hind-sight… I will give you a few of what I think are the more obvious examples of God’s guiding hand in my life.
I met my husband at a dance, what we used to call a “mixer” in the 60’s. Out of the blue he came up and introduced himself. I could not have found a better partner if I had personally interviewed thousands of young men…no Facebook or Internet dating matches…and yet, there he was…and here he still is after over 41 years.
The birth of each of our 3 children was definitely a moment where I felt God’s presence.
We moved to this area from Washington, DC in 1980. Our children were very young…ages 3, 2 and 6 months. We had one weekend to find a house. The first thing I always asked the realtor during our whirlwind tour was “Where is the church? Where is the school?” When we looked at our current house on Audubon, 3 houses from Charlevoix, the first thing the realtor showed me was St. Clare School, which you can see from the front porch. I knew this was the home for our family. St. Clare School and Parish have been an important part of my life for over 30 years now.
Bob and I each have had medical emergencies where if the other had not been there, we likely would not have survived. We did not necessarily handle the situations perfectly, but I feel God was guiding us and giving us strength to cope. I believe that God’s loving spirit has helped me throughout the inevitable ups and downs in life. It has given me hope, peace and forgiveness.
And although I do not know what heaven is, I have faith that this same spirit of God in us is what we realize after death when we join God and our loved ones.
