I’m Cynthia Littmann, and I was fortunate to join Fr. Andrew and the St. Clare Community’s trip to Poland.
I want to thank you for all the donations and prayers that you sent; our trip was a truly humbling experience.
When we arrived in Przemysl we split up into two groups. Fr. Andrew took a group to the Retreat Center in the mountains near Ustrzyki Gorne and the group I was with volunteered at the Refugee Center in Przemysl that was in a vacant Tesco store…about the size of a Costco. At the Refugee Center people would arrive by the busload. Rooms were set up by country that the refugees wanted to go to. The refugees usually only stayed 24 hours while transportation was arranged for them.
Midway through our trip we switched locations.
When we arrived at the Retreat Center we were told two things:
always have your passport on you and
don’t unpack your suitcase - you may only have a moment’s notice if you have to leave.
At the Retreat Center John and Scott would drive into town about 45 minutes away to get supplies daily. On Monday our last in the mountains John and Scott bought supplies and they really scored big time…they had bought 16 roller suitcases. As we unloaded the supplies to the activities room, we had to close the doors so we could unload the bags of clothes, shoes underwear etc. When we opened the doors, it was like Black Friday at Best Buy. Of course, the roller suitcases were the first to go.
I think one of the images that stuck with me is refugees young and old all pulling a roller suitcase. I can’t imagine what it was like to pack up your life in one suitcase and embark to an unknown location. Many refugees were hoping to go back home; hoping there was a home to go back to.
So, my final thought is ….What would you pack in your suitcase??
