Do you wonder how SVdP here at St. Clare spends the money that you donate to us throughout the year? There are many uses of course, but we often find ourselves helping neighbors purchase appliances--particularly refrigerators and stoves, and sometimes washers and dryers. Not all landlords provide appliances these days, and the cost of moving them from one residence to the next is prohibitive for some families, so we assist with appliances more often than you might think.
SVdP is pleased to have a relationship with Al’s Furniture and Appliances on Houston Whittier near Kelly. Al Tibaudo has served non-profits and individuals on the east side for 37 years (originally at Kercheval and Alter). Al buys used appliances—usually 5 or 6 years old, refurbishes them, and sells them at a discount. He includes a 90 day warranty and home delivery. When we do a home visit and realize that a family could use a stove or refrigerator, we are able to contact Al and he can generally deliver what we need within a day or two, and at a very reasonable cost. Thank You, Al Tibaudo!
A family without a functional kitchen is not able to provide healthy meals for its members. Without a fridge to store milk, eggs, cheese, fruits, vegetables and more, or a stove to prepare meals at home, families may rely on pop, junk food and “take out” or “drive-thru” to feed everyone. That’s expensive and unhealthy. Or they may simply go hungry.
The next time you open your refrigerator, say a little prayer for someone who may not be quite as fortunate…and know that our conference always strives to be good stewards of the resources we are provided!
