Today on the first Sunday of 2022, we commemorate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany means "MANIFESTATION," referring to the appearance of Jesus. The significance of this day is not just the arrival of the magi, but the coming of the visitors from the east to adore the newborn King. As they offer gifts, they announce to the world that an astonishing event has taken place: all people will know the glory of God. The Gospel says that there were three gifts, but never says how many magi brought them. The tradition claims there were three and even ascribed them the names of Melchior, Balthasar and Casper. In iconography, one is often depicted with dark skin. Their remains are said to be in Cologne, Germany, where they are honored with a feast on July 24, the date the relics were transferred.
