Today we light the second candle on our Advent wreath. Some refer to this as the Bethlehem candle which represents the birthplace of Christ (the first coming) and the hope of Christ coming again. During Mass, right after the prayer of Our Father we pray: Deliver us Lord…. as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ.
This prayer is particularly meaningful during Advent when we prepare for Christmas with joyful expectation. I think we all are yearning with hope for peace, reconciliation, an end of the pandemic, a vaccine, good health, love, or other good things in our everyday life.
Advent, with all its liturgies, scripture readings and practices, is teaching us how we ought to wait. As we light the candles, place the ornaments, and sing the Advent hymns, we pray O Come, O Come Emmanuel, renew our faith! Be Bold Be Holy Be Catholic.
