Former Grosse Pointe Park resident Mary Lois “Sis” Addy-Sommer, 95, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at home in Clinton Township surrounded by her family.
She was born May 10, 1920, in Howell, N.Y., to Dr. Frederick and Cornelia McCarty. Raised in Wellsville, N.Y., Mary Lois graduated from Marygrove College in 1941 with a degree in social work and married Robert Addy the same year. Robert died in 1983. In 1994, she married Rudolf Sommer.
Her family said Sis was a woman of dignity, honesty, compassion and integrity. Never one to complain, she took everything in stride. Her soft spoken and placid nature did not divulge her exceptional inner strength.
A longtime parishioner at St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic Church, Sis was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing bridge and served as a volunteer member of the Bon Secours Assistance League and the Christ Child Society.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by her husband, Rudolf Sommer; children, Susan Trout (Harry), Cornelia “Dee” Steiman (H. Robert); Mary Lynn Miller, Charlene Addy and Robert Addy (Karey); grandchildren, Susan Quello Shadan (Farhad), John Trout, Gregory Miller, Keith Miller (Emily), Michelle Steiman, Melissa Lucassian (Rick), Jessie Addy, Monica Addy, Gary Lentz and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Frederick McCarty and granddaughter, Marian Frame.
She will be missed deeply by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic Church, 1401 Whittier, Grosse Pointe Park.
Donations may be made to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen or Solanus Casey Center and mailed to 1820 Mt. Elliott, Detroit, MI 48207.
